How to Make a Delicious Irish Sea Moss Tea in 4 Simple Steps

Today I’d like to share with you how I make Irish Sea Moss Tea. This delightful and mineral-loaded tea is made by steeping a special blend of spices and tea leaves for 5 to 30 minutes. While the spice blend is steeping, add Sea Moss Gel and your choice of milk or nut beverage and sweetener to a mug.

In this article, we’ll give you our special blend recipe for our Spicy Irish Sea Moss Tea.

Click here for our recipe for how to make Irish Sea Moss Gel. Once you have made the gel you can store it in the refrigerator. We recommend using it within two weeks.

Making Sea Moss Tea

Ingredients:

Boil some filtered water in a pot and add your Irish Sea Moss Gel. The ratio is approximately one part Irish Sea Moss Gel to four parts filtered water. You can add the ingredients straight into a mug and mix well before drinking.

However, I like to make a litre (34 ounces) of Irish Sea Moss Tea to drink throughout the day. The flavour is quite mild and plain. So I like to spice it up a bit.

Jamaican Sea Moss Tea

Servings

5 cups

Time Frame

Preparation – 5 minutes

Cooking – 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Irish Sea Moss Gel
  • 1 Litre Filtered water
  • 1 cup Coconut Cream (or alternative nut beverages)
  • 1 Cinnamon Quill
  • 3-5 Whole Cloves
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Ginger Root
  • Honey or sweetener to taste

In a pot, add 1 litre of filtered water, 1 cup of Coconut Cream, Cinnamon Quill, whole Cloves, grated Nutmeg and grated Ginger root. Boil the tea until you get your desired flavour.

Note: Cloves and Nutmeg have quite strong flavours, so you may need to adjust the amount to your preferred taste.

I prefer it to be a bit stronger so I like to simmer the mixture for up to 30 minutes, topping up the filtered water as it reduces.

In a coffee plunger or teapot, add 1/4 cup of Irish Sea Moss Gel. Pour the spicy tea into the coffee plunger or teapot and mix it with the Sea Moss Gel. If you are using a coffee plunger, then plunge the tea to separate the whole ingredients from the liquid.

Alternatively, if you’re using a teapot, you can pour the tea through a strainer. Add your choice of sweetener to your Jamaican Sea Moss Tea and enjoy.

Spicy Irish Sea Moss Tea

This is my favourite. I make this Chai Tea blend by the kilogram which for most people is too much, but we drink our Spicy Irish Moss Tea every day. So we’re moving through it quite quickly. I prefer to make a homemade Chai Tea and then add the Irish Sea Moss Gel.

So here’s my basic recipe for our homemade Spicy Irish Moss Tea. Keep in mind I use whole ingredients. Some people may prefer to use powders but that’s just not my style.

Servings

40 portions

Time Frame

Preparation – 25 minutes

Mixing – 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 200 g Black Ceylon Whole Tea Leaves
  • 50 ml Dark Agave
  • 40 g Honey
  • 2 g Cumin Seeds
  • 2g Brown Mustard Seeds
  • 2 g Fennel Seeds
  • 2 g Kalonji (Nigella) Seeds 1
  • 3 g Fenugreek Seeds 2
  • 4 g Cinnamon Quill
  • 5 g Whole Cloves
  • 1 Bay Leaf – crushed into pieces (not powdered)
  • 3 g Ginger Root (grated)
  • 3 g Star Anise
  • 5 g Cardamon Pods
  • 4 g Peppercorn Melady Blend of Black, Red and Green
  • 2 g Caraway Seeds
  • 10 g Cocoa Nibs

Mix all the ingredients together and allow to sit and marinate for two to three weeks. The longer it ferments the more the flavors come together. We make a larger batch and use it over several months. The blend becomes quite sticky.

  1. Interesting as I’ve read it’s better not to have it in hot things as you lose some goodness out of the sea moss!

    • Hello Debbie,

You are right in how you are looking at that. The main thing with what we are sharing here is just another way that the gel can be used and still get some benefits out of it. If you prefer, try making a chai with our recipe, let it cool, and then add your Sea Moss Gel for a chilled experience.
