Pro Tips on Doing a Sea Moss Fast

Before you jump into doing a sea moss fast, it is my preference top have a health check. I stress that I’m not a Doctor, and this is not medical advice.

For me, knowing what condition my health is in before making any changes to my routine, particularly one of this magnitude, is key. With that taken into consideration, there are some other things to consider before fasting also.

These tend to be more in the area of general preparation for fasting with sea moss.

Rather than tie your time up going on and on about the benefits of fasting, and the various types of fasting (which you’ll find plenty about on our site in the Fasting and Furious category), let’s get straight into fasting on sea moss.

5 Sea Moss Fasting Pro Tips

Pro Tip # 1

Prepare your sea moss. Making the most out of your sea moss is really quite easy once you know how to work with it.

I have found that when fasting, using a gel made from your sea moss is going to be the easiest way to integrate this into your routine. This is really simple as the gel is so versatile.

Make sure that you put some time into the preparation stages, this is critical for working with any seaweed. You can follow our sea moss gel preparation steps if you don’t know how to do this already.

In short, you need to make sure you:

  • Thoroughly wash your sea moss
  • Soak it in filtered or spring water for 24 to 48 hours
  • Take it out of the water it was soaking in
  • Blend it

If you follow those simple steps, you’ll have sea moss gel you can turn to during your fast at any time.

Pro Tip # 2

Keep your sea moss gel in the fridge, in a clean jar.

As much as time may not seem to be on your side, you need to avoid rushing, and not stick a dirty spoon (or fingers) into your gel. Always use a clean spoon for serving, and treat your gel like any other food. Keep it clean.

This will be particularly important if you are using your gel in water as a part of a water fast. Sea moss is a great way to help keep your mineral intake up while fasting on water.

If you notice that your gel is starting to smell a bit funny, it’s either getting a bit too old, or it has been exposed to something while in the jar that is causing it to turn.

If this is what you are experiencing, and your sea moss fast is a water based fast, then it can be a little unpleasant and can make your water smell and taste a bit strange. You really don’t want to encounter that if you can avoid it.

Pro Tip # 3

If you are taking the juice fast path, simply add as much gel as you want to your juice or smoothie. It will blend in and become unnoticeable. 1

Unlike a water fast with sea moss, the texture and flavor of the juice will cover any potential textures or flavors from your gel.

Normally there is not taste or smell with sea moss gel when it has been carefully prepared. When I have found there is a salty or beachy taste to the gel it is usually because I’ve rushed the prep.

So make sure you apply Pro Tip # 1 and wash your sea moss thoroughly.

Adding a couple of large spoons of gel to your juice or smoothie will increase the thickness, or viscosity.

This can also take what is normally a bit light and unsustaining from a ‘staving off the hunger pains’ point of view with some juices, and power you through for hours longer.

Pro Tip # 4

Gradually increase your sea moss concentration. As the day draws on, you may feel that you need something more to get you through. I find that if I double down on the sea moss gel at times like this, I can put the hunger pains and feelings of being light and foggy off for a few more hours.

When it comes to the later part of the day, typically dinner time, I will use between 1/4 and 1/3 of a cup of gel in my water (about 1 liter) and I’m good for the rest of the night.

Pro Tip # 5

Brushing your teeth. Ok, so where are you going with this one Matt? What the heck has brushing your teeth got to do with fasting?

Quite a lot! As the skin in you mouth is some of the thinnest on your body, it is a way for your body to purge toxins. While fasting, this process is going to ramp up to a new level.

Brushing your teeth, tongue, and inside cheeks in the morning, before you consume anything, will help to strip away any waste that your body has been trying to flush out.

I use sea moss gel after brushing (with non fluoride toothpaste) as a mouth wash. Given that it is loaded with minerals, I don’t spit it out. My mouth is clean after brushing and thoroughly rinsing with clean water.

The other thing that I have noticed is that the gel does a great job at helping sensitive gums.

Your approach to personal hygiene while fasting is critical, and a sea moss fast is supported more so when you look after every organ.

Your skin is the single biggest organ, and keeping it clean helps with the cleansing process the fast work towards achieving.

  1. Great Article……. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while.
Question…… During a Seamoss Fast, how many can you consume each day as far as glasses, how many times per day etc….(every 3hrs, 3x/day)???

    • Thank you for your kind feedback and the valuable question, Derek.

I trust that you have explored the various considerations with regard to your specific medical circumstances before looking at starting a fast. If not, it would be wise to seek some advice first from someone who can assess your specific situation face to face.

As far as how much sea moss to consume on a daily basis, I can only really answer that from what I do, but this is based on me knowing where I’m at, you’ll be in a different space.

During a sea moss fast I’ll cap the amount of sea moss I consume to 250ml of sea moss gel per day. That’s roughly 10 grams of dried sea moss per day based on how I make my gel. I know it doesn’t sound like a lot, but you don’t really need to hit it so hard. Keep in mind that the intention wile fasting is to fast.

I’ll normally add this to black coffee or water if I’m not just taking a whole spoonful straight. The key is to not interrupt the enzymes while you’re in a state where you are fasting by having too much at the wrong time.

Luke has done a lot of work here on different fasting methods that I’ve applied. I’m a fan of the intermittent fasting as a common approach and I follow this daily where I don’t eat or consume anything other than water after 8pm and before 3pm.

I give myself a 5 hour window for consuming other foods or sources of nutrition. I find this allows my body to compete the purging, or detoxification stage more effectively than if I eat of drink (including sea moss) too soon.

There may be some value in the Fasting and Furious section he curates that you’ll enjoy.

The sea moss simply provides some sustenance through the nutritional value it brings, and the associated benefits of the many other non-mineral and non-vitamin components found within it.

I hope this has been helpful.
